The high-profile deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain this past week remind us that suicide is a significant and rising cause of mortality in the United States. A new CDC “Vital Signs” report summarizes trends in the US suicide rate, actions that can be taken by health care system stakeholders to identify and help people at risk of suicide, and resources that are available on a national level. The CDC specifically suggests that employers can:
- Promote employee health and well-being, support employees at risk, and have plans in place to respond to people showing warning signs.
- Encourage employees to seek help, and provide referrals to mental health, substance use, legal, or financial counseling services as needed.
